A Guide To Glove Coatings

When it comes to glove coatings, it can be hard to know where to start. Choosing the right glove for the task at hand is essential and understanding the properties of different glove coatings is a large part of this.

To keep our safety gloves at the forefront of innovation, we have incorporated new and proven technologies into the coatings of all our updated glove styles – giving our wearers the best possible protection.

There are 3 main coating materials used for cut resistant gloves: polyurethane (PU), nitrile and latex. We’ve put together an helpful, simple at-a-glance guide to help you pick the right coating:




PU is a very resilient, durable and flexible polymer. These characteristics make it an excellent general purpose, multi-industry coating that works particularly well for light manufacturing and small part assembly type operations.

The only downside to PU coatings is that they tend to have higher penetration levels into the seamless knit liner and can thereby sometimes heighten skin sensitivity issues. The PU coating is also non-breathable and so is often only used as a finger or palm dip style to reduce any perspiration build up inside the glove. 


Nitrile is a great coating to provide protection against abrasion, punctures, cuts and snags, along with chemicals, oils, greases, and fats. This makes it an excellent choice for use in abrasive material handling, building construction, small parts assembly, metal fabricating, oil and petrochemical refining, and automotive and battery manufacturing.

However, those wearing the flat or standard foam nitrile gloves may find them less dexterous as nitrile does not have the same micron thickness properties as PU, for example.


Latex has very high elasticity and outstanding grip compared to other glove materials, especially when it has been processed to form a crinkled surface. Crinkle surface styles offer great grip, cut/tear resilience, and are often used in handling rough wood, boxes, cut stone, scrap metal, and concrete block. Latex also has good durability and strength, and is able to withstand extreme temperature.

However, the soluble protein content levels found in some latex coated gloves can cause allergic reactions for wearers who suffer from latex allergies.
