Why Hand Protection Must Fit Like A Glove

Many of us have heard the phrase “to fit like a glove” when figuratively speaking. However, when literally talking about gloves, ensuring a good fit for the job takes a bit more thought than simply picking a pair off the shelf and hoping they will be suitable.

Indeed, as they come in a range of sizes, designs, materials and coatings, choosing the wrong gloves can do more harm than good. To help those looking for the perfect glove for any task, TraffiGlove has five golden steps called “Check 5” that should be followed:

  1. Check to ensure you understand the risk
  2. Check the weather conditions
  3. Check the products being handled
  4. Check your hand size
  5. Make your selection

Check you understand the risk

The main reason anyone wears gloves is to protect their hands from damage. When thinking about any job, the first thing to consider is whether you need to use your hands at all. Could the job be done using equipment or a machine instead? If you are not manually handling a hazard, then the risk to your hands is minimal.

However, there will be tasks that require the use of your hands. In such a situation, you'll need to move on to the next step of “Check 5”.

Check the weather conditions

If your work takes you outside, it's likely you'll be keeping an eye on the weather so you can decide what to wear – be that a heavy, waterproof jacket or shorts and t-shirt. The same is true of gloves; if it's cold then you'll want gloves that are well insulated or, if it's wet, possibly a glove with a waterproof coating to keep your hands dry.

Check the products being handled

Knowing what you're going to handle is a key consideration when choosing a glove. What kind of surface does it have? Is it wet, oily, abrasive? Does it have sharp or ragged edges? Also, does it move quickly, such as a rotating blade? All of the answers to these questions help determine which glove you should choose.

Check your hand size

The first hurdle is selecting the right type of glove, but if it's the wrong size then it can be next to useless! Check out your hand size by requesting a handy TraffiGlove hand sizing chart. All our gloves come in a range of sizes, with the most popular being size 9, which accounts for more than half our glove sales.
